History of Alden Yachts

Alden Yachts - Miss Demena 1966 Mistral Sloop - Facebook

Alden Yachts was founded in 1909 when the designer, John G. Alden decided to start his own Boston design office. His journey started as an apprentice with B. B. Crowninshield and became their productive designer.

As well as designing boats, he became an experienced sailor and won his first Bermuda Race with Malabar IV in 1923. He successfully went on to win multiple other races including, Bermuda Race victories in 1926 with Malabar VII and Malabar X in 1932. These high-profile wins contributed to the success of Alden Yachts.

Alden Yachts mostly specialised in designing and making sailing boats, though Alden also drew plans for commercial and military vessels in the 1940s and 1950s.

The company went on to create boats for 99 strong years, up until 2008 when the company decided to close production of their yachts. The company donated the plans and design record to the Hart Nautical Collection of MIT Museum. Visit the MIT Museum’s website to discover their database.
