Laurin Yachts – a Potted History
Laurin Yachts was founded by Arvid Laurin, who was an innovative Swedish designer born in 1901. In his early life, he trained as a civil engineer at Chalmers in Goteborg and would go on to join the military service in the Swedish Navy. He began sailing at just 13 years old, starting with his first sailboat, which he went on to make improvements to its design to increase its speed.
Through his passion for yachts and sailing, Arvid would go on to win an Olympic bronze medal in the Star class at the 1936 Games.
Influencing Coastal Yacht Design
He created his first yachts during the 1930s and his early designs focused on racing and cruising boats that would go on to influence the development of long-distance and coastal sailing vessels.
Between the 1960s and 1980s, Laurin’s designs, such as the Laurin, 32, 28, 31 and others, were produced in collaboration with various Scandinavian shipyards, creating enduring classics in yacht design. Below we go into more detail of some of Laurin’s popular yachts in his range.
Laurin 32

One of the most iconic models associated with Laurin is the Laurin 32, which Arvid launched in 1965. This yacht, with its full keel design, offered excellent directional stability and became popular among sailors seeking reliability in long-distance voyages.
Its efficient use of teak for water resistance and its adaptability for customisation further cemented its legacy. Arvid Laurin had created over 230 of this model from 1964–1988.
Laurin 28

The Laurin 28, designed by Arvid Laurin in 1966, is a celebrated small cruising yacht recognised for its robust construction and excellent performance in rough seas. Built between 1966 and 1982, approximately 155 units were produced.
This made it one of Laurin’s more widely manufactured models, along with the Laurin 32.
Laurin 31

The Laurin 31 yacht, which was introduced in 1968, is another iconic design from Arvid Laurin, blending the elegance and durability characteristic of his work. A total of 40 units were built, with production continuing as late as 2003. This mid-sized cruiser is celebrated for its seaworthiness and appeal to serious sailors.
