FeatherStream B-Hub 3B

Mason 43

Our long keeled Mason 43 with keel hung rudder and prop aperture was re powered by the last owners to a much bigger 4JH4-TE 75HP Yanmar. The engine and gearbox ratio called for a 23 inch prop which was much bigger than the 19 inch achievable in the aperture. We initially replaced the old damaged propeller with a fixed three blade specified with a higher pitch to compensate for the smaller prop diameter. However this caused us problems with too much propulsion at tick over revs and when sailing the prop would free wheel at high speed with the engine in forward gear and add a huge load jamming the gearbox if we locked it in astern.

So we discovered Darglow and the FeatherStream. Not only was it a complete joy to work with the engineers in thinking through the problem. Their attention to detail and our requirements were second to none. But also the feature of the FeatherStream to be able to change the pitch cassette so that subsequent sea trials could show exactly how the propeller performs, and allow us to fine tune it to deliver the performance we need made it the stand out choice for us.

We now have much better control maneuvering at low speeds in tight Mediterranean harbours and bays and under sail the feathered prop glides through the water like a dream.
